Captured 'Soldiers'
My response to images released during the occupation of Iraq when an image and supposed threat of a captured US soldier surfaced. The blank-expressioned prisoner was sitting stifly against a concrete wall, with a rifle barrel pointed to his head. His face, clothes, and gun were identical to a 12" collectible Army doll. There was no confirmation that such a soldier had been captured at that time.
It turned out to be a fake threat a few weeks later, but everybody reading the article had a fun time picturing just how desperate some terrorists had to be to threaten to kill an action figure. So I did my own parody pic in the same tone. Naturally everyone was worried at the thought of losing the leaders of both the GI Joes and the Autobots.
"Do you cry a lot too, clone-daddy?"
I never really had a problem with Boboa Fett's appearance in Attack of The Clones like some people (there was a lot of debate about what was known previously of his past. I always figured that stuff occurred after the movie once Jango Fett was killed, once he was older than age 10). Maybe that's why I was more comfortable with making light-hearted jokes about it. This one happens to use a direct quote from Mystery Science Theater 3000's Sci-Fi Channel-era episode of Parts: The Clonus Horror.
Domo-kun NERV Logo
Another cliched spoof of Evangelion with Domo-kun. I dunno, I guess they just go well together.
God Gives Adam Carl Sagan's The Demon-Haunted World
Yeah, if only. I wouldn't have to wonder how many states in the next decade will have banned education entirely...
Darth Vader's Osaka Comedy Bit
Revenge of The Sith Darth Vader action figure with lightsaber 'swatting' action. I decided to arm him with a scaled-down thick paper fan and submit a Clonetrooper underling to a good ol' tired ol' Osakan slap-stick routine. 'Baka' is of course an all-purpose noun that means just about every concept relating to 'fool' or 'idiot'.
Roffle, roffle, he's still hitting him. That'll keep us entertained for decades.
Angry Baby Emperor
Once again I've got an image made relating to the Star Wars prequels, this time the infamously ever-furious baby done as the Emperor, complete with big, heavy, dark red lettering for the scene quote (with some minor beveling for visual flair). I swear, all I did was make the eyes red and adjust the contrast/lighting to fit the source screenshot. My goodness, is that baby pissed...
Twenty People's Hero Points
A relatively popular congratulatory image of mine done sime time ago, it's based on a Russian joke about three kids wanting a pair of bluejeans. The text is a mix of English, Cyrillic, and Cyrillic-styled letters, so it's English and Russian that looks like English (I figure that to the degree I have it in leaves very few people who can't see Cyrillic as anything, even fewer who can't see Cyrillic as anything but Russian, and a whole lot of people in between who could visualize it just fine). I don't recall anybody ever earning those bluejeans yet; I think ratting on your parents is worth 1500 points each, though.
Mort Walker is Crazy
Now the original comic was pretty damn weird enough as it is, but I decided to indulge Mort in his Gnome obsession. You know, just a jab from one eccentric to another.
"Christmas is on October 3rd" Banner
Yeah, speaking of eccentric...
I'll be sure to let you know what this one was supposed to mean once I figure it out.
"I Voted For Dean" Banner
Used in my signature immediately following the 2004 elections. I guess "YEEEARGH!" wasn't wooden enough for the Democratic campaign? I dunno, I never was a fan of party politics.
Mobile Suit Gundam: GM Design Lineage
One of several projects I completed back in the Fall '03 season, this visual chart demonstrates the progression of mobile suit development relating to the GM, a simplified Gundam which the Earth Federation rapidly manufactured and deployed for the final push into Zeon space at the end of the One Year War in the series. The arrows and lines are used to show the general progression and influences earlier suits had on the development of later ones, with arrows generally reflecting direct modification (I could have made it even more accurate and complex, but the main priority was to fit everything into an effective amount of space). By every mobile suit unit is a brief bit of researched info listing its full model number and official name, specific or estimated date of roll-out, productions numbers, and type of deployment (testing and/or combat, if known to that detail). The intent was to stick directly with the mobile suits directly involved in developing the GM during the war itself (with the exception of the Gundams, which were all directly derived from the 8 prototypes anyway), hence the lack of more specialized variants (most were modified from the standard GMs and included in the total unit count) and the Federation prototype mobile suits like the Guntank and Guncannon.
The artwork I used was done by Mark Simmons, well-renowned Gundam consultant and webmaster of the old Gundam Project site, which this art was done for. I stuck with his older art, since a larger amount and variety of units were done with it and the shading on the newer art made modifications and recoloring harder.
This left me with a few gaps still and some color inaccuracies. This included recoloring all the GMs and adjusting the contrast & color saturation on the Ground Gundam and Gundam G3. I also had to recolor a Zaku II in a more recent/common example of EF colors. This just left the E-type GM Test Type seen in 08th MS Team and the elusive, cobbled-together Zanny. I recall achieving the former by modifying the color scheme and panels/details of a post-war C-type GM (which story-wise I gather both the C and E-types used high-performance Gundam components that had been simplified, powered-down, or removed when the mass-produced GMs were further refined for cost-efficiency over high performance, and so the later unit shares many similarities and a near-identical appearance). The Zanny however had to be heavily redrawn from 2-3 images, including a Ground GM head and a prototype MS for the exposed components. Much of the head, legs, and hips I had to draw (*gulp*) by hand. Not the most complicated piece I could have done (maybe if I had high-resolution art I could do a spiffy version with a background, fancy effects on the lines & arrows, and all sorts of junk), but I think it's a good visualization of the early development and resolves the number of Gundams produced and the exact relation of them to their refined GM successors.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Zeonic Mobile Suit Development
Containing over three times the units of the previous chart, this once was completed less than a week after the first. I had to take the layout into a lot of consideration and make sure everything fit with as little wasted space as possible (although I feel the progression flow suffered a tad, but it's still quite clear which units influenced what). This one covers the majority of the Principality of Zeon's mobile suit production, which in under five short years, Zeon Institute's 'Mobile Suit' experiments had to grow from basic configuration and system testing, to combat-ready space colony & battleship-assault units, to rapid development of diverse capabilities (Earth-environment mobility, high-maneuverability space combat, anti-Federation mobile suit roles, etc).
The larger variety of Mark Simmon's older artwork was far more crucial this time around, as otherwise I'd be left with only fairly-standard Zakus and Goufs. Once again I still had old color inaccuracies and missing schemes to deal with, such as the the Zaku 1-A, the blue Gouf, both Gelgoogs, and all Zakus with the C/F scheme. I had to paste on details to recreate the Zaku II-J and the A-type Gouf, which were incorrect or missing in the old set. The Kaempfer on the other hand only existed in the new artwork, thus I chose to remove its shading for consistency. Using a reference photo I modified the Kaempfer into the YMS-18 prototype, changing the toes, knees, waist cables, biceps, shoulder-pads, and head, while adding skirt armor and built-up chest/torso plating. The two units I included that Simmons did not draw at all were the Galbaldy a and the MS-11 Acht/Action Zaku (technically a derivative of the unfinished MS-11 'Zaku III' project, but it best fits the bill). These were taken from from design art for the unproduced MS-X manga/model series sequel of late-development units. I had to adjust their contrast & outlines, and clean up the messy texturing and quality issues with lots of airbrushing. I think they turned out alright. I kinda wish I could have included the 5-6 known MSM aquatic mobile suit models, the Gouf Flight-types, and the Newtype-use suits, but obviously I only had so much space and needed to stick with the essentials. Perhaps I should have modified the first unit image to be the ZI-XA2 with ballasts instead of arms, come to think of it...
Colorized Rei Ayanami line art
I colorized and added a bit of shading & texture to this line art of the Evangelion character Rei whist passing through that one anime CG Shrines website. Whom was the line art done by, I suppose we're all wondering? No clue, could be official for all I freaking know. I decided to try colorizing in a way lighter and more subtle (at least compared to my typical solid-color attempts), and generally explore the usage of the airbrush tool on a new project. I give myself five gold stickers; one for effort, another for staying in the lines, and one for each hour I glared at the screen comparing pastels applied at 3% pressure. It seems to have turned out pretty good to me, definitely a good exploration of new techniques (although I have no actual sense of shading and therefore can only assume I added it sparingly and reasonably enough to satisfy my own artistically-uneducated and completely flat persepctive). I think the eyes are the best; I did a couple layers of pinks and reds to obtain what I feel is more realism and depth in representing the lack of natural iris pigmentation than plain deep red. I even toyed with desaturating the hair even further or perhaps going with a more Kaworu-like dull blonde, but perhaps another day, maybe once I learn how to apply some actual paint textures or grasp shading enough to leave spaces white for highlighting... Or I feel like hearing more than one person balk about it.
Herr Burgermeister's Stuggle With Toys
You'll have to figure out what this one is about on your own.
Ok, you don't have to figure it out on your own, I'll tell you. Just stop crying first.
You done? Good; big boys don't cry. I created this thing a few days after watching the Rankin-Bass stop-motion special Santa Claus is Comin' to Town for the first time in over a decade. In it, a very large, very bitter, and very German lawmaker named Burgermeister Meisterburger declares all toys to be illegal, impractical, and immoral, forcing the then-young Santa Claus to make new toys for the town's children and sneak in to deliver them at night. It's a very odd but charming little film, and I guess this was my attempt to clear my head in its aftermath. Obivously a direct parody of an early printing of Adolph Hitler's Mein Kampf, I put it together the background and text from scratch, plus a near-satisfactory image of a Burgermeister figurine. The final touch was achieved with a old book cover texture.
This reminds me of how I perhaps should try my hand at stop-motion animation again, as I haven't done anyhting in the medium since age 14 (I started animation experiments at age 6 or 7, progressing to some 1-minute construction paper sthing done in 8th grade. Ahh, childhood). Rankin-Bass' style really cracks me up; it's just so bizzare and frantic and yet can convey so much subtlety. I'll leave this train of thought here as a reminder to myself.
Shit-stirer animated image
This one speaks for itself. I made the basic images quite some time ago but I retooled them and made the overall message even more simple than it already was. I guess I mainly like his expression; he just loves stirring that mess up. Or at least the reactions is causes. Sometimes it is hard to tell which is more important to shit-stirers.
